Long ago, in the three realms—Dharti, Swarg, and Paataal—a powerful asur named Mahishasura spread chaos and fear, his strength unbeatable by any devta or man. His cruelty grew with every victory. The devtas, unable to stop him, sought the help of Bhagwan Vishnu, Bhagwan Shiva, and Maa Lakshmi. In response, they united their divine powers to create Maa Durga, a force of unimaginable strength.

Maa Durga, riding a lion and armed with weapons from all the gods, faced Mahishasura in battle. The asur, proud of his boon, thought he could never be defeated, but Maa Durga’s might was unstoppable. For nine days and nights, they fought, with Maa Durga displaying new powers each day.

On the tenth day, Maa Durga struck Mahishasura with her trishul, defeating him and bringing peace back to the realms.

This victory is celebrated in the Durga Saptashati, a sacred text of seventy-seven shlokas that tell the story of Maa Durga’s triumph. Through these verses, we are reminded of Maa’s divine strength to protect us from the asurs of fear and ignorance, and how, with her blessings, we can overcome any challenge in our lives.
